Statement of Purpose
The “Boys & Girls Club of Goshen” was launched in 1956 and saw substantial growth over the next 60 years becoming the amazing Boys & Girls Clubs of Elkhart County. None of this incremental but continual growth and development would have been realized, however, was it not for the dedicated efforts of so many individuals, including paid employees, numerous concerned and committed volunteers and donors. These employees and volunteers understand their efforts in support of the Club’s fulfillment of its mission to children may take many forms. However, each also realizes and accepts a fundamental truth. The Club can continue to serve children only to the degree it can raise significant unrestricted operating cash. Even if each and every Club member paid his or her full annual membership fee of $15, the revenue generated will constitute less than 1% of the operating money needed by the Club in 2017. Membership dues are kept low to serve our mission of reaching those who need us most, ensuring all children have the opportunity to become Club members.
Boys & Girls Clubs of America had its beginnings in 1860 with three women in Hartford, Connecticut – Mary Goodwin, Alice Goodwin and Elizabeth Hammersley. Believing that boys who roamed the streets should have a positive alternative, they organized the first Club. With character development as the cornerstone of the experience, the Club focused on capturing boys interests, improving their behavior and increasing their personal expectations and goals. A cause was born.
